Chair Whole Systems Thinking, Session 19

International Institute for Sustainable Future (IISF), a non-profit independent research training and educational institute, is one of the leading global organizations committed to the creation of a sustainable world order. Formerly, the Urban Development Institute (UDI) set up by the Government of India in collaboration with the United Nations in 1974, it is one of the pioneering institutions to bring environmental concerns to the fore. The institute is registered with the NGO / DPI and ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) of the United Nations as the Global Futures Network (GFN). Objectives and Activities: The main objective of the institute is to bring education and awareness about the critical issues related with environment and ecology of the planet and in formulating solutions so as to create a sustainable future. The institute conducts research, training, planning, besides advising governments, international organizations, and corporations in the field of environment, urban planning, ecological architecture and design, industrial safety, disaster management, sustainable energy, organic agriculture, and global ecology. With its focus on brining sustainability to developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, it has worked in more than 32 countries in the last 15 years, on varied projects such as food development in Mexico, waste recycling in Malaysia, appropriate technology development in Sri Lanka, sustainable energy development in Kenya, water planning and IT in Ghana, environment and epidemiology programs in Bangladesh and population programs in Egypt, besides innumerable projects in India, US, Germany, Japan and Russia. For its work, the institute has received several awards and recognitions, including: Kawasaki Award for planning the best information city by the Mayor of Kawasaki, Japan, 1987, Special Award for Global Environment Protection by the Maharashtra United Nations Association, 1989, Priyadarshini Sustainable Development Award by the Priyadarshni Academy, 1993 and several others. The Institute has published several books on sustainable development including the bestselling Indian Environment Directory. Its latest publication, Pedagogy of the Earth, has been widely accepted as a textbook in Colleges and Universities. Ecoearth, its quarterly magazine is circulated in the UN and around the world. The Institute has a highly qualified inter-disciplinary staff of planners, architects, engineers, researchers and other professionals drawn from various fields, working full time or as associates. It has one of the finest libraries of more than 7000 books and 12,000 files of material on relevant subjects collected and updated regularly. Educational Background: a postgraduate studies at Bombay University in Economics 1. Senior Lecturer at Elphistone College in Mumbai - 1986 to 1990. 2. Senior Lecturer Distant Education Program of Bombay Univ. - 1987 to 1990. 3. Kamat Hotels (India) Ltd. The project for the construction of the Orchid, the only Ecotel hotel in Asia Harinder, is unigue as her work in healthy building design, planning and construction she has helped a new awareness for India and it's impact on ECO-Tourism.  Also her workshops in alternative medicine in YOGA, AYURVED & NATURE CURE Systems since 1983. Along with Horticulture, preservation of ecological balances and programs for the welfare of women and children in India, she brings along a quest for eternal truths through active service to humanity. She was recipient of Bharat Nirman Award of in Alternate Therapy in 1998.
