Building a Better World One Community at a Time

The general philosophy behind Engineers Without Borders - USA, several examples of projects, and an overall vision for integrating outreach activities benefiting developing countries into existing university engineering curricula. How to partner with disadvantaged communities while involving and training internationally responsible engineering students. How to help train engineering students through hands-on involvement in development projects. Projects are initiated by, and completed with, contributions from the host community, which is trained to operate the systems without external assistance. This helps ensure that projects are appropriate and self-sustaining. Projects are conducted by groups of engineering students under the supervision of professional engineers and university professors.

BIOGRAPHY:

A professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado, Bernard Amadei founded Engineers Without Borders - USA as well as Engineers Without Borders International. He received the Manuel Rocha medal for his doctoral work in rock mechanics, the first Schlumberger Lecture Award, and the 2002 Colorado Bank One Award for outstanding outreach community service. He's co-authored two books, over 150 technical papers, and has provided consulting services to various engineering companies and organizations around the world. He's now leading a paradigm shift in engineering education and practice called Earth Systems Engineering (ESE) that emphasizes the interaction between engineering structures and natural systems.
