Sustainable Housing Efforts for the 21st Century

How do you keep people from freezing to death during frigid winters? According to Clive, “You break the cycle by building relationships.” “My job is coach,” Habitat identifies housing problems and solutions, then allows 20 years to eliminate substandard housing in each area. Each family must earn a certain amount of “sweat equity” before they can move in. In the US, this means working a set number of hours on the construction of their home. Because families do pay for their homes, which are generally one-half to one-third the cost of renting an apartment, people who receive Habitat for Humanity homes become taxpayers.

BIOGRAPHY:

Clive Rainey was Habitat for Humanity's first volunteer in 1977. Ever since, he has served in leadership positions including Africa Director, and fundraising executive. Habitat for Humanity has established the home ownership concept of sweat equity. This is integral to Habitat's method of building simple, decent houses with people in need of a better place in which to live. In 1999, Clive was named to his current post, Director of the 21st Century Challenge. In this capacity, Clive works with communities across the country. encouraging them to declare sub-standard living conditions as unacceptable and to set a date when their city and county will meet affordable housing needs. He also works closely with international efforts at Habitat for Humanity to solve unique building challenges in developing countries
