A sociologist, retired from the University of Minnesota's Global Studies Department, Barbara's work there was largely focused on issues of international development, with most of that concentrated on the roles of women in that process. This University was a major participant in the birth of the Women and Development field of study, along with other collaborating universities.
In the past years, she has been a part of a number of large solar cooking projects in Africa, mostly Kenya and more recently Tanzania, as a part of s Solar Cookers International team usually. She was also part of a large solar project with Rotary sponsorship in Turkey and has substantial field experience, as well as serving as a board member of SCI for many years.
Her strongest commitment is to solar cooking, the only way to cook food with no environmental impact whatsoever, but realizes the realities as well. Night comes, rain falls, and households need another type of cooking device. Currently there is little to no sharing of information between the fuel efficient stove promoters and those who work with solar cooking --- her presentation will outline the problem and seek audience and panelist input towards a solution which will not dilute the basic work of either group but will serve the consumer more satisfactorily.
