Michael Royce is the Founder and Executive Director of Green Empowerment, a small non-profit based in Portland Oregon, whose mission is to promote community-based renewable energy projects internationally to generate social and environmental progress. Green Empowerment provides technical, organizational, fundraising and media assistance to NGOs in 5 countries in Central America and Southeast Asia involved in micro hydro, solar, biomass and other community-based energy and watershed conservation projects. Before founding Green Empowerment in 1997, Michael Royce had been a trial lawyer from 1979-1995 and co-founder of a Portland, Oregon law firm. He also has extensive experience with non-profit foundations, including provision of legal and general corporate advice. He is also a co-chair of the EnerGreen Foundation in Canada, Green Empowerment's sister organization. In addition to his volunteer position at Green Empowerment, he has served as Secretary and then President of Magrath Energy Corporation from 1986 until the present. He has led or participated in Human Rights delegations to El Salvador and Nicaragua, organized a cooperative for traditional crafts in Kentucky, and served on the boards of various environmental organizations. He has a deep commitment to internationalism and the environment based on principles of social justice and equality.
