Development Education In Engineering: The Experience of Ingegneria senza Frontiere

We present the principles, goals and activities of Ingegneria Senza Frontiere (ISF) related to the educational programs. ISF is a network of independent, non profit, university based organisations whose mission is centred on the role of technology in human development. It is pursued through the promotion and management of both development cooperation projects and educational programs, based on the development education approach, together with partners in developing and developed countries. The general aim of ISF educational activities is the enhancement of those skills required for technical people to cope with the challenge of a sustainable human development in a globalised society. The long term objective of ISF in the educational field is to set up university programs in engineering for development, integrating the concept of appropriate technologies in the technical lectures together with basics of history, economics and sociology of development. The program shall be designed in order to enhance the learner skills of teamworking, communication, conflict and change management, intercultural relationship. This approach puts the learner at the centre of the learning process and is based on a participative methodology that uses active and cooperative learning. Herein we show how this fits the needs of engineering education and contributes to the lifelong learning process of the university staff and the part of the community involved, ultimately focusing on the basic objective of understanding how technology can really improve the well being of the world’s citizens, in the viewpoint of social equality and justice.
