Organic Bazaars as a Tool for Sustainable Development

Organic bazaars innovated through several years of experimentation by the Institute for Integrated Rural Development (IIRD) in India are proving to be a viable model for exchange of goods and services leading to nature conservation and sustainable use of resources. The organic bazaars incorporates the features of local marketing/domestic marketing and alternative marketing. The principles and procedures followed in organic bazaars keeps away middlemen and at the same time involves a variety of local people in a marketing process for delivering ecological products for the consumer and ensuring remunerative prices for the producer.A unique feature of organic bazaars is the community based quality assurance and guarantee system which is cost effective and replicable. The organic bazaars or similar modes of marketing and their multiplication all over the world provide opportunities for achieving sustainable development. Through the initiative from IIRD , Organic Bazaars are being initiated in five cities in India (Calcutta, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Trivandrum) linking small and marginal organic farmers and consumers in the cities. NGOs from these Cities are cooperating with IIRD in this prorgamme called the National Programme for Alternative Marketing.
