Technology for human development: Sustainable management of geothermal resources in South Peru

The purpose of this study is verifying the technical feasibility and the socio-economic-environmental consequences of the  implementation of a tele-heating network at high elevation exploiting a thermal water  spring located near the village of Chivay (Perù). The work is inserted within the framework of the ISF-Tn projects (Ingegenria Senza Frontiere  - Trento) and it is developed in collaboration with the non-governmental association  El Taller - Asociaciòn de Promociòn y Desarollo, the University of Di Arequipa and the village of Chivay. The project points to the creation of a model able to exploit in an optimal way the hydrothermal resources, thus improving in general the life quality in the local  context. The aims of the study are:

1) providing the hospital with hot sanitary water  and, possibly, with heating, thus improving the life conditions in the hospital; 2) improving the hot-spring management, optimizing the resource available and incrementing the influx of local people and of tourists.

Obtaining acknowledge of all of the others thermal resources in the area (the Colca Valley). The local association El Taller  attends to the social feasibility of the intervention, considering the possible alternatives together with the local people. Moreover, other useful information has been obtained: the mapping of the existing resources, the analyses of the thermal waters, information about the greenhouse management, about the waste management and about the local environment problems.
