GIMMIE SHELTER: Solving the Global Housing Shortage |
There are no signs of world population growth slowing over the next few decades. Five hundred million affordable shelters will be needed within the next ten years. Appropriate ‘Off-the-grid’ low cost housing must be created with in-country unskilled labor to meet this need. Housing costs must be driven down to under ten dollars per square foot while greatly improving comfort and hygiene. This must be done while leaving no ‘footprint’.
Building materials must be manufactured locally in order to virtually eliminate the huge energy cost associated with material importation, shipping, and warehousing. Sustainable agricultural fibers will be utilized to create organic-based composites. Co-blended with inorganic materials and bound together with natural binders that have been in use for thousands of years, quality housing can be created that will last hundreds of years. And erected in weeks for a fraction of current costs.
