The purpose of this project was to introduce elementary and high school students in a third world community to the possibilities that arise from using computers and the Internet.
A team of engineering students from the Engineering for Developing Communities (EDC) traveled to Katmandu, Nepal with equipment in tow and installed computers in two small schools that previously have had no experience with such equipment. Computers were installed in the Diana Public English School, as well as a remote school in Kavre in cooperation with the Himalayan Light Foundation, an NGO in Nepal.
The school in Kavre is off the grid, therefore the computer is powered by photovoltaic cells mounted on top of the school. The computer installed in the Diana Public English School was connected to the Internet, and allows students to communicate with student members of EDC at CU-Boulder. The student team also prepared tutorials and instructions for the students in Katmandu. The CU-Boulder team maintains communication with Katmandu, encouraging the students.
The EDC student team will explain the process of the project, the process of duplicating the project, the value of creating similar projects all over the world, and level of enhanced education these students received from the computers.
