Preserving and Building on Traditional Skills

Tibet Heritage Fund has worked for ten years to preserve the cultural landscape of Tibet. Their projects involve historic buildings and settlements and community work. The vocational training program THF is conducting to train young Tibetans in traditional and modern construction skills is aimed at preparing the current young generation for the enormous changes taking place in the Tibetan cultural realm because of the rapid economic development of China. Building on traditional skills as an important Tibetan resource, THF works with a number of Chinese, regional and international partner institutions.

The presentation will highlight the experiences of ten years of work in Lhasa, Qinghai and Sichuan, and present an overview of sustained results achieved so far. Building on exisitng skills and involving local communitites in every step of project planning and implementation has yielded tangible results. More than 300 Tibetans have been trained, and some have been subsequently employed by prestigious monasteries and clients in Tibet. Traditional Tibetan architecture has been promoted. For the next 5 to ten years, THF plans to increase rural vocational training to prepare people for the changes in economy and infrastructure that will increasingly reach even remoter areas of the Tibetan cultural realm.

During the course of the conference, further links for co-operation in the field of training and exchange could be developed. THF also proposes to show two to four panels of display of their vocational training program.
