Sustaining the Bering: International Cooperation in a Global Ecosystem

Lying between Alaska and Russia, the Bering Sea is one of the world's most important marine ecosystems. A robust fishery, it provides the U.S. with over half of its seafood, and is also fished heavily by Russia, Japan, Poland, and many other countries. However, overfishing, global warming, and other factors have put strains on the Bering ecosystem, which is of great concern to scientists, fishermen, and indigenous people. As the Bering lies largely in both U.S. and Russian waters, only an integrated management system which has at its core international cooperation will succeed in sustaining the Bering's natural resources.

This talk will focus on the creation of a new body, the International Bering Sea Forum, and how the Forum will work to influence the important process of managing the Bering.
