Poverty Alleviation using Integrated Waste Management & Farming Systems

Prof. Chan is an environmental engineer retired from the Environmental Protection Agency (Region 9 Pacific Islands) and a member of the extended ZERI network of scientists. This overview lecture will be an introduction to the non-chemical, energy producing integrated waste management and farming systems that Prof. George Chan has designed and implemented many places in the world. These systems completely treat human and animal waste in such a manner as to provide opportunities for value added food crops and fish farming as well as cultivation of edible organic mushrooms, earthworms from vermiculture for organic chicken or turkey feed, algae as a protein supplement for livestock, the use of biogas for heat, light, and electricity, rich organic compost for soils, and fertilizer rich water for irrigation of crops. Not just another biogas energy system, his systems are an integrated whole system design providing practical solutions for multiple needs. Whenever and where ever implemented these systems eliminate pollution, meet critical needs and create economic prosperity contributing to cultural viability.
