Big Head Todd and the Monsters represent many aspects of our Sustainable Resources mission and values. They've demonstrated a friendship and loyalty to stay together for 20 years and have independence, the courage to take risks and reach high. While students at the University of Colorado in the late 1980s, they launched their own independent label selling a then-unheard of 58,000 copies on their own. Their first more commercial album on the Giant label, Sister Sweetly was a platinum-selling success but they kept their music in balance and stayed true to their values. With 8 albums and more than 3500 live performances under their belts, they still say things like, "Record execs are supposed to know when something is going to happen commercially or not. Ultimately, I think that artists need to be true to themselves and let the chips fall where they may.”

Many years ago, the Sustainable Resources director, Steve Troy and his company Jade Mountain helped the band set up a solar-powered music studio where they still record. Todd says, “I sometimes joke that it sounds better because solar power has good karma, but it’s all in good fun. There are some advantages however, because inverters in solar systems deliver beautifully even... waves of power, where as grid power can be ‘spikey.’”

Their music represents an irresistible combination of catchy, rough-and-tumble rock, with deep storytelling themes. Inspired guitar talents play with an aggressive, blues-influenced style and proficiency. In Todd's words, “I try to tell as many different stories, in as many different ways as I can. ’Lost Child Astronaut’ and ‘Beauty Queen’ are two of my favorite storytelling songs. Something between Dylan's ‘Tangled up in Blue,’ which I think is the greatest storytelling song ever, and Zeppelin's ‘Kashmir’ is what we were after: storytelling with atmosphere!”

Todd Mohr, Rob Squires, and Brian Nevin - we're extremely pleased to be working with you and appreciate your efforts to help us relieve world poverty and achieve the UN's Millennium Goals.
