Biomimicry as a Design Tool

Location: UMC 247

This workshop will teach the skills necessary to use biomimicry as a tool for addressing challenges in sustainability. Through interactive and dynamic exercises, participants will gain a deeper understanding of biomimicry, practice solving real-world challenges using biomimicry, and explore some of the more intricate nuances of the emerging science of looking to nature for inspiration. The workshop will be taught by Dayna Baumeister, PhD, a co-founder of the Biomimicry Guild, who regularly leads biomimicry workshops around the country. She will be joined by John Mlade and Derek Esposito, two Guild interns who have been working with biomimicry as a design tool over the last few years. 7 AIA credits are available for architects.

Dayna Baumeister - with degrees in biology, a devotion to applied natural history, and a passion for sharing nature’s wonders with others, Dayna Baumeister has worked in the field of Biomimicry for the last 7 years as an educator, researcher, and design consultant. Dayna finds sustenance in Montana as a gardener, hunter, and naturalist.

John Mlade, Derek Esposito - John and Derek will assist Dayna with the workshop. They both have significant experience researching and teaching biomimicry on the university level.
