The
Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Alternative Building Materials for
Building Officials, Engineers, and the Idly Curious
What:
A seminar taught by Bruce King, a structural engineer with a private
consulting firm in Sausalito, CA, will review the more prevalent
alternative materials of our time, including straw bale, rammed
earth, adobe, high-volume fly ash concrete, and more. Based on his
field experience with actual projects, Mr. King will present engineering
properties pertaining to structure, fire, thermal performance, and
moisture, discuss historical precedents and construction techniques,
and answer some or all of those questions you've always wanted to
ask.
Bruce King is the
author of Buildings of Earth and Straw - Structural Design
for Rammed Earth and Straw Bale Architecture. He has completed
many projects using straw bales, stabilized earth, fly ash concrete,
and other alternative materials as structure, has written and lectured
extensively on more ecological approaches to structural engineering,
and advises building officials around the country on alternative
construction. He is the founder and Director of the Ecological
Building Network (EBNet), a non-profit information resource based
in Sausalito, and the founder of the Green Building Press. He's
a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California,
the International Conference of Building Officials, and the American
Society of Civil Engineers.
