Integrating Appropriate-Sustainable Technology and Service-Learning in Engineering Education

University of Colorado, Boulder CO

September 27-29

Information and registration

This pre-conference workshop will provide a forum for engineering educators and students as well as representatives from NGO’s, governmental agencies and international consultants to share information and exchange ideas regarding appropriate technology program and course development and/or the integration of appropriate, sustainable technology concepts into existing programs and courses. The challenges and benefits associated with providing experiential learning by implementing service-learning to reinforce these concepts will also be discussed.

The workshop will consist of a combination of keynote lectures, presentations, working groups addressing more specific questions, and plenary discussion periods. Workshop participants will be asked to submit a short paper summarizing their current efforts associated with incorporating appropriate technology and service-learning into their curriculum. The workshop will provide a "meeting of the minds" where participants can briefly describe what they are doing in these areas. Facilitated discussion periods will explore the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and implications of incorporating appropriate technology and service-learning into their curriculum.

Breakout sessions will provide engineering educators with the opportunity to network and exchange appropriate technology course material. A list of best practices and educational benefits will be produced.  Engineering educators will be provided with the opportunity to work together to find solutions to some of the challenges and risks associated with incorporating appropriate technology and service-learning into their curriculum. Opportunities for intercollegiate collaboration on service-learning experiences will also be discussed and presented. Finally, the implications of including appropriate technology and service-learning in engineering education will be discussed.

Session topics include:  university views on service-learning and appropriate technology from a programmatic, institutional and student perspective; viewing service-learning from the eyes of the various stakeholders; and current happenings in service-learning and appropriate technology course development.
