LAND OF THE MORNING STAR The western half of the island of New Guinea has known many names in the last 200 years - Netherlands New Gunea, West Papua, Irian Jaya and Papua. It is an extraordinatry place where snow-capped mountains drain into massive rivers and 100's of languages are spoken. Despite its wild beauty and mineral and cultural wealth, however, it remains strangely forgotten. Where life had passd with little change for tens of thousands of years, the swirl of slave traders, plumage hunters, colonialism and post-war politics has now overtaken a people, and their rightful hopes for independence. With an incredible mix of eyewitness accounts and archival footage, from the Baliem Valley to the United Nations Building, this film tells a story of an island people caugth up in a saga of colonial greed, Cold War sellouts and fervent nationalism. It is an intimate tale with an epic scope, a documentation of a people now at risk of becoming a minority in their own land. I PROMISE AFRICA Tragedy is something the entire world experiences, often in different forms and sometimes simultaneously. Filmmaker Jerry Henry captures on film the beauty that can emerge from even the most tragic of circumstances, as these orphans in Kenya share their contagious passion for music. (United States/Kenya, 2003, 3 min) MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES: Return of Refugees Chris, a doctor from England, treats returning Afghani refugees at the Afghanistan/Iran border, and is concerned for the well being of a woman with a heart condition. (United States/Afghanistan, 2003, 6 min) PETER MATTHIESSEN AND WHOOPING CRANES Few authors so artfully span the worlds of fiction and non-fiction as Peter Matthiessen ( The Snow Leopard, Killing Mr. Watson ), and few subjects so hold his attention as birds, whether in Tibet or Central Florida. To chronicle the arrival of the first whooping crane chick born east of the Mississippi in over a hundred years - the result of an international restoration project - Matthiessen joined an expedition that provided him the concluding episode of his recently published book Birds of Heaven, Travels With Cranes . (United States, 2004, 5 min) The Magic Knot Five years after legendary climber Alex Lowe was swept away by an avalanche, Lowe's friends and family honor his memory by returning to the Himalayas to establish the Khumbu Climbing School. Designed to give back to the Sherpa climbers on whom nearly all Himalayan expeditions depend, the school teaches critical mountaineering techniques and skills essential for staying alive in one of the world's most formidable working environments. As the instructors and Sherpas work together to bring the school to life, it becomes apparent that mountains aren't the only bond they share. (United States/Nepal, 2004, 25 min) DEADLY SOUNDS IN THE SILENT WORLD In an age where national security is paramount, the United States Navy has implemented a system of active sonar to locate and track the movement of enemy submarines. The only problem is a huge one - these deadly sounds wreak havoc on marine mammals, and have been responsible for massive strandings and deaths of great whale, dolphin and fish populations. With the heightened security measures of the Bush Administration, recent legislation that protected aquatic life from deadly sonar has been rescinded. All that is oceanic is at stake. (United States, 2001, 10 min) PSICOBLOC: WINNER, BEST CLIMBING FILM, 2004 Austrian Klem Loskot, a world-renowned boulderer, has found a more satisfying form of climbing, called "deep water soloing" by the Brits, and Psicobloc by the Spanish. The overhanging limestone walls of Mallorca provide perfect opportunities to forge routes sans ropes with the Mediterranean Sea 60 feet below as a sensual crash pad. (United States, 2004, 8 min) FALLING This short film is both a thrill ride and a meditation about harmonizing with the awesome forces of nature. Featuring the waterfalls of Agua Azul, Mexico, and kayaking legends Hayden Glatte and Lars Holbek, this film will take you on an unforgettable ride through waterworld. (Mexico, 2004, 5 min) Empowering the Children of War to Break the Cycles of Violence Purchase your tickets through the Boulder Theater (this will sell out quickly!) http://www.bouldertheater.com Thursday - 30-Sep-2004
