Session Chair Information
Welcome Chairs! We are delighted
that you have agreed to chair a session for SR04!
This is the first place you should
come to find information on all aspects of your chairing. If you don't
find answers to your questions here, then please contact maron@sustainableresources.org
, 303-998-1323 x 110.
FAQs for Chairs
- What exactly is a session chair? How am I different than a facilitator?
- Chairs are the point person for their session. You're the go-between
for presenters and the SR04 staff regarding presenters' questions
and concerns.
- Chairs are knowledgeable about the content of the session, and you
are the one who should introduce both the session and the
presenters in the context of the broader picture of the
topic. In other words, you should be able to situate the importance
of the talk in the overall topic.
- Facilitators are not necessarily content knowledgeable; they are
people who are skilled at discussion facilitation. They
will help move the session along in a smooth way, and make sure that
a wide range of people can participate in questions and/or discussion.
- Who is my facilitator? How do I contact my facilitator?
- Not all chairs have facilitators.
- Maron is sending contact information.
- What steps should I take between now and my session?
- You should contact and introduce yourself to your presenters. You
should have received an email that gives you the names and contact
information for your session presenters.
- You should obtain biography and presentation abstract information
before you introduce your presenters. For bios and abstracts of presenters
talks, go to: http://www.sustainableresources.org/sr2004/program.html
- Try to set up an informal meeting between yourself, your facilitator
(if you have one) and your presenters to discuss location, AV issues,
format changes or needs, and just to meet one another. Place
to meet are listed below.
- Is there a predetermined format for my session? Can I improvise?
- Generally, most presenters expect to be speaking for 15-20 minutes
with a 10-minute discussion; but if you have more or less than 4 presenters,
you can change this. If everyone agrees, you can follow another format.
- Audio visual issues
- For Chemistry, Humanities and Fine Arts: these buildings are all
equipped with "smart" rooms. In other words, all
of your techonology needs should be met there -- LCD projectors,
power point, slide projectors, etc.
- For the rooms in the UMC (with one exception listed below): all
rooms have LCD projectors, but if the presenters have any other
av needs, they should contact Karen at: karen@sustainableresources.org.
- For the tracks of Native Cultures, Ecotourism and Digital Bridges,
which are all located in the UMC: these rooms don't have permanent
audio-visual facilities, however it is possible to meet individual
presenters' needs. To communicate those needs, please email
Karen at: karen@sustainableresources.org
all of the rooms will be equipped
at all times for LCD projectors except for three tracks which will have
to coordinate the specific session needs: Native Cultures, Digital Bridges
and Ecotourism.
- Maps to campus and rooms. See http://www.colorado.edu/campusmap/
- If you need transportation from the airport go to: http://www.sustainableresources.org/sr2004/travel_air.html
- Meeting my presenters
- Meeting in advance of your session: highly recommended
- Where? UMC, the CU student union, has a large cafeteria with
various food options and smaller coffee shop/pizza/subway sandwich/Chinese
food shops
- To meet with the presenters in your session, you can:
- Meet in your assigned room
- Go to the food court at
the UMC.
