Track Keynote Talks

Track keynotes are organized into 3 parallel sets of 4 talks. Each set has a theme of either "Resources," "Community Building," or "Organizational Sustainability" and includes a speaker addressing the theme from either the personal grassroots (P), institutional corporate or non-profit (I), educational (E) or governmental policy (G) point of view.

  emcee: Deborah Keene, regional director Heifer International
Fred Kirschenmann -  A leader of the organic/sustainable agriculture movement, Fred is the country's largest biodynamic farmer and shows how to confront the major threats to the small farm and the future of sustainable agriculture with a more createive and integrative approach. (E)
Debra Lew - Manager for the National Renewable Energy Lab's Environmental and International Group with 10 years experience in renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, policies, and deployment. (G)

Doc Rosen - for 40 years a social justice medical activist, Doc helps supply medicines, needles, teaching tools and treatment supplies as well as acupuncturists and other health care volunteers to villages in Guatemala, on Indigenous Reservations throughout North America, and around the world. (P)


Maureen Silos - Surinam - Afro-Caribbean leader evolving powerful and practical new development systems. Director of the Caribbean Institute for Human Rights and Sustainable Development. (I)

  emcee: David Shaller, Sustainable Development Coordinator, EPA
Dayna Baumeister - with a background in biology, a devotion to applied natural history, and a passion for sharing the wonders of nature with others, Dayna became a keystone for the Biomimicry Guild introducing the idea of “nature as model, measure, and mentor.” (E)
L. Hunter Lovins - president of Natural Capitalism Solutions and co-founder of the Rocky Mountain Institute; Hunter's work with scores of utilities, industries, and governments has been featured on "60 Minutes", "The Today Show", CNN, and other leading media. (G)
Ali Sharif - pioneered permaculture in Latin America, establishing more than twenty projects in Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru and Brazil and teaches a comprehensive four month intensive for young Third World project leaders on practical applications. (I)
David Wann - Dave's 30 years exploring a more sustainable future resulted in books like Affluenza, Biologic, Superbia!, Deep Design, Neighborhoods on Purpose, and many more as well as 25 videos/TV shows on sustainable agriculture, communities, transportation, manufacturing, energy, and other sectors. Anita Burke  - former Sustainable Development Coordinator for Royal Dutch Shell, proponent that extraction of hydrocarbons does not fit into a model of sustainable development. (P)
Olivia la O'Castillo - president of the Asia Pacific Roundtable for Cleaner Production and on the UN's new Water and Sanitation board, Olivia introduces and promotes innovative pollution-solving strategies. (G)

Giindajin Haawasti Guujaaw - elected chief of the Haida Nation, political activist, teacher, medicinal practitioner, "Firekeeper," artist, historian, and performer who has devoted most of his life in efforts to protect the environment. (E)

Edna Brillon - Haida/Cree mentor/trainer who has done group healing and leadership work with over 2000 First Nation people on 16 different reservations

Gifford Pinchot - Chairman and co-founder of one the first graduate schools to weave sustainability throughout its entire curriculum, Gifford coined the term “intrapreneur” and has helped launch over 700 businesses, several of which are each doing over a billion dollars in sales. (E)
