University of Colorado - Earth Systems Engineering Program
Back To List

The EDC program is a new educational, research and outreach program that fits under the new initiative, Earth Systems Engineering (ESE) in the College of Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. It presents a long-term solution and a unique opportunity for educating a new generation of engineers capable of contributing to the relief of the endemic problems afflicting developing communities worldwide.  Through proper global education and outreach, this generation can help improve the livelihood and survival of about 5 billion people on our planet who are most in need.

The EDC program is interdisciplinary and involves engineering and non-engineering disciplines (business, sociology, history, etc.). It is being developed in partnerships with a wide range of academic and non-academic groups including: universities, technical, vocational schools, and individuals in the US and in developing communities; engineering companies; humanitarian organizations; NGOs; and interested individuals.

The EDC program addresses a wide range of issues such as water provisioning and purification, sanitation, health, power production, shelter, site planning, infrastructure, food production and distribution, communication, and jobs and capital for various developing communities including villages, refugee settlements, ghettos, etc.

Finally, the EDC program involves all three components of engineering education, research and development, and outreach and service.

The University of Colorado's mission is to advance and impart knowledge across a comprehensive range of disciplines to benefit the people of Colorado, the nation, and the world by educating undergraduate and graduate students in the accumulated knowledge of humankind, discovering new knowledge through research and creative work, and fostering critical thought, artistic creativity, professional competence, and responsible citizenship.
